The trumpet parts in the works of Brahms are on the whole fairly undemanding, great pieces to play, particularly the symphonies. He composed at a time where the trumpet had devoloped into an instruments with valves. Brahms was not to sure of the capabilities of this technology. His parts tend to still use the notes of the natural instrument, a perfect  example, in itself pretty rare, is in the 3rd movement of Symphony No.1 which use Trumpets in H (B natural-In German B refers to Bb so B becomes H) Likewise the end of the 2nd Symphony has a triumphant ending playable on the D trumpet.  This extract for C Trumpets is surely one of his better pieces of scoring for the trumpet taken from his overture which makes use of student related melodies - The most famous being "Gaudemus Igitur" (click here for info)   I have made these recordings using my rotary valve trumpets, which are themselves Germanic- Most German orchestras, such as The Berlin Philharmonic will use this type of instrument.
